The project aims to develop new sustainable value chains (VC) using Farmer Participatory Research methodology to produce and distribute diverse and healthy foods from African farms to local and export markets. The value chains being developed in Uganda include bananas, cowpeas, millet and sorghum. The project was implemented in Kaberamaido, Ngora and Wakiso districts.
• 3 Inception meetings to launch the project were held, consent forms were signed by all participating farmers. 134 farmers (88 females and 46 males participated in the base line survey.
• 329 farmers were recruited to participate in the project activities (66 males, 178 females, 41 youth male and 44 youth female) All the farmer groups were supported with farm tools
• 8 mother gardens were established and planted i.e. cowpeas (3) and 23 baby gardens, millet (2) and 36 baby gardens, sorghum (3) and 59 baby gardens.
• 8 farmers were trained to become seed multipliers of Millet seed
• Farmers undertook practical training on agronomic practices of the different project crops, soil and water conservation, soil fertility building, post-harvest handling, farming as a business and enterprise selection.
