A self-financing organic farm where farmers see ecological methods tested next to traditional ones, and then take them home.
For ten years, Kulika trained farmers in Uganda, Rwanda and Ethiopia on borrowed premises. Each time the training moved on, its demonstration gardens were left behind.
The Centre opened in April 2007 as a self-financing unit that grows and sells organically produced marketable crops.
Short courses and an eleven-month programme, with field trials alongside.
Residential blocks at the Centre alternate with practice on the farmer’s own land. On-station trials test organic pest control, soil fertility and new crop varieties; the Kulika Organic Pesticide was validated on nine demonstration sites and certified by UgoCert. Interns from Makerere and other universities train here each year.
Housing, feeding and breed improvement for mixed livestock.
Dairy cattle, goats, pigs, poultry and rabbits are kept as working demonstrations. Farmers learn fodder growing, zero grazing, biogas from manure, and simple animal health care that cuts losses.
Agroforestry, apiary and value addition you can see working.
A multi-storey food forest grows fruit, timber, medicinal plants and vegetables together. Honey, juices, seedlings and other products are sold through the Kulika Shop; these enterprises keep the Centre self-financing and show farmers a business model they can copy.
Rooms and a meeting hall for residential courses and workshops.
Guest rooms, a dining area serving food from the farm, and a hall for trainings, meetings and retreats. Partners and community groups can hire the facilities, with income going back into farmer training.
Short courses and an 11-month programme. Every graduate commits to training five more farmers, usually neighbours or family.
Kulika Honey and agro products grown at the Training Centre. Sales keep the Centre self-financing and fund farmer training.
3,286 people trained at the Centre in 2025 (1,878 women and 1,408 men), and 98 interns from Makerere University, Bukalasa Agricultural College, Bukomero, Bethany Land Institute and Victoria University completed placements. Its 14 enterprises earned UGX 112.8 million, which goes back into farmer training.
Lab-tested and field-validated in more than 20 districts against aphids, bollworms, coffee green scale, mealybugs, red spider mites and thrips. Certified as an organic farm input by NOGAMU and Kilimo Trust through UgoCert.
Synchronised breeding raised 297 pigs of improved breeds, including Landrace,, sold to farmers as breeding stock.
Programmed hatching grew the flock of local birds to 150. 380 farmers, pupils and interns trained.
65 people trained in apiary management and hygienic processing; about 340 kg of honey processed.
A rabbitry for manure and meat, goats, and 3 cows and a bull whose manure feeds the gardens and whose milk funds training.
Fruit from the farm becomes Kulika wine and juice, and a seed bank keeps quality seed for farmers.
