Principles and practices of Sustainable Organic Agriculture
This involves understanding farming systems in Uganda, nutrient recycling on a farm, how to use organic manure, the practice integrated farming (keeping animals, growing crops, planting trees), and so.
Farm power and Appropriate Technology
Farmers are taught and they learn to make energy saving stoves that are environment friendly, make charcoal briquettes, simple solar driers, charcoal fridges, tip taps for hand washing, build animal houses, use animals for farm transport and ploughing gardens.
Farmer-to-Farmer extension education
Kulika training obliges farmers to train 5 other farmers who are usually neighbours or family members. Similarly, the trained group representatives are expected to train their group members and with that, the numbers of indirect beneficiaries grows. Indirect beneficiaries are what we term as ‘contact farmers.’
Gender analysis and family life education
Farmers learn about gender perspectives and analysis, family life and resources, conflicts and corruption, and are encouraged to practice sharing of responsibilities with their spouses and children and involve the whole family in matters that concern the development of the family.
Livestock Husbandry
Farmers learn about the importance of having different types of livestock on the farm, livestock management, feeding of animals, housing, and improvement of local breeds.
Farm management
In this topic farmers learn about farm planning, managing a farm as a business, keeping accounts records and establishment of income generating small projects.
Soil and water conservation
this aspect is learning about caring for the soil; feeding the soil, and maintaining its quality, as well as practicing different methods of conserving water on the farm e.g. the use of rain water harvested from roofs, the use of drip irrigation using bottles, and recycling water on the farm.
Foods and nutrition
Farmers learn about food sources, nutrients, planning and preparing family meals, food hygiene, food preservation and security.
Crop Husbandry
Involves learning about crop propagation, cropping patterns, agronomic practices, pest and disease management and post harvest handling as well as practicing good methods for crop harvesting and storage to minimise loses.
Agro-forestry and environmental management
Farmers learn about environment issues and problems, how to conserve environment, its relation to agriculture, laws and regulations that govern environment and agro forestry.
Product marketing strategies
Farmers learn about production and marketing, food distribution issues and group organisation for marketing, and Kulika also links some with organic movements that support farmers with market information, help group members to write applications for funding, and establish small capital and credit projects.
