Equity and Merit Scholarships aim to assist talented but economically disadvantaged students from some of the world’s poorest countries.

The Equity and Merit Scheme reflects our determination, as a major higher education institution in a relatively wealthy society, to address issues of educational disadvantage, not only nationally, but also internationally.

The Scheme was launched in 2007 and operates in Bangladesh, Kenya and Rwanda. The programme has three strands:

• Scholarships to support students registered on full-time postgraduate taught programmes based in Manchester;
• Awards for students studying by distance learning;
• Support for students on specific University-validated programmes in Uganda and Kenya.

Equity and Merit Scholarships for Uganda and Rwanda 2011/12

The University of Manchester is pleased to invite applications for up to seven scholarships for postgraduate taught masters starting in September 2011. The scholarships are intended to support students from Uganda and Rwanda who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and would not otherwise be able to study abroad.

This scholarship programme is locally managed on behalf of the University by Kulika Uganda, a registered not-for-profit organisation with over 25 years experience in managing scholarships.

The scholarships cover full tuition fees, return international airfares and living expenses. 

Awards are available in a wide range of subjects including engineering, environment, medical and life sciences, law and education.

Eligibility

The scholarships are aimed at applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds. Applicants should:

• Be a resident citizen of Uganda or Rwanda and have not previously studied abroad;
• Hold a first or upper second class (or the equivalent) undergraduate degree;
• Have a minimum of two years relevant work experience;
• Be committed to returning home and able to demonstrate the potential to make a positive impact on the future of Uganda or Rwanda;
• Have a clear idea how studying in the UK would benefit both his/her career and the country.
